How can fresh flowers be made into dried flowers and keep the color? Here are five ways that you can try at home.
Flowers supplement to the environment with beautiful elements, unfortunately we can just keep them for few days or a week. Drying flowers can be a favorable way to preserve the flowers and you can put the dried flowers in vases or frames at home.
According to the type of flowers, there are different drying techniques that can be easily practiced at home.
When is the best time to dry cut flowers?
To maximally preserve the color, we need to cut them off before they fully blossom. After that, we put the flowers in a dark, cool and dry place to prevent the flowers from fading way under the sun.
If you want to dry a bunch of flowers (like wedding flowers), it's better to dry it immediately after use, because the flowers have probably been cut for at least a day. If you happen to receive cut flowers like roses, put them in a vase until all the flowers fully blossom and that will be eye-catching. If you do want to preserve their beauty for longer time, dry the flowers before they are in full bloom.
What's the best way to make dried flowers?
Hanging up Flowers
You can hang flowers upside down with strings, hangers or other things.
The most common (also infallible) method is to collect the flowers into a small bundle or keep a single branch and then hang them/it upside down. I always use hangers and rubber cords to tie the flowers before lining them up; then I will tie the flowers to the hangers in the closet. If their stems are fragile, it is suggested to tie them up. You can also fix flowers to a pole, but remember to keep them parallel to the floor.
It usually takes several weeks to dry the flowers, and the petals may fall off. But this is the best way to preserve the whole bouquet if you decide to display the flowers in a vase.
Press Flowers
Press the flowers with a book can be a favorable way for you to preserve the flowers without stems, and it won't take much space.
It is suggested to cut off the flowers from the stems before they are in full bloom in the morning after the dew drops. Next, put the flowers without stems on newspaper, plain paper, white paper, tissue or absorbent paper (any paper that can absorb water), and cover another piece of paper on top. Then, put the flowers in a book and close the book carefully. You can also stack more books on the one with flowers. It will also take weeks to dry the flower.
After drying the flowers, you can frame them or turn them into a decoration.
Microwave Flowers
If you don't want to wait a few weeks to dry the flowers, microwave flowers can be made in a day. Put the flowers (without stems) in a microwave dish or other container, and cover the flowers with a mixture of quartz sand or borax and corn flour. Do not cover the container and microwave it for one minute or more until the flowers are getting dried. Finally, keep the flowers in the mixture for a day before they become completely dry.
Desiccant
Dry the fresh flowers in air before cutting off the stems and leaves; pour 2-3ml of desiccant into a glass bottle or other container; flatten the flowers and pour the desiccant until the flowers are submerged. Make sure the flowers are not squeezed. It takes a week to dry the flowers in this way. But it allows the flowers to keep its original color, and the desiccant can also be reused.
Silicone Powder
Dry the fresh flowers in air before cutting off the stems and leaves; pour 2-3ml of silicone powder into a glass bottle or other container; Keep some distance between each flower to prevent them from being squeezed. Pour the silicone powder to cover the flowers and close the cover tightly. The flowers can be dried in about a week. Put the dried flowers in a lovely sachet and fumigate with your favorite fragrance, then there will be a flower sachet. Wrap the dried flowers with beautiful silk cloth is also a good idea.
Where is the best place to show them?
If you want to preserve the dried flowers for a long time, just keep them away from the window or direct sunlight. At the same time, do not put them close to stoves, fireplaces, air conditioners or hot vents. Basically, if the dried flowers are kept in a cool room, they will not fade. Dried flowers cannot be washed in water. You can take them outdoor to remove the dust.
Tips for making dried flowers
Bind the flowers tightly with strings, otherwise the binding strings will get loose as moisture loses, and the bound flowers will fall down.
Keep some distance between each flower to prevent them from being squeezed or getting mildew.
Remember not to hang the flowers up to dry them in plum rain season.
Keep flowers fresh before drying.
